Northside Voice’s founder, Crystal Jarrell Johnson, was inspired by classical music and opera when she was just 8 years old. At 15, she began to train and pursue performance and competition opportunities more seriously. Earning a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance at Abilene Christian University, and a Master of Music in Voice and Opera Studies at the prestigious Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Ms. Jarrell began a performance career immediately upon completing her formal studies. She has performed with many opera companies around the United States, including Indianapolis Opera, Nashville Opera, Utah Festival Opera, San Diego Opera, and Opera San Antonio. She has appeared as a soloist with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Golden State Pops Orchestra, Indianapolis Arts Chorale, Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, Classical Chorus of Abilene, Utah Festival Opera Orchestra, and at the Indianapolis Film Festival. A native of San Antonio, Texas, Ms. Jarrell Johnson has appeared with the San Antonio Symphony, San Antonio Chamber Orchestra, San Antonio Chamber Choir, San Antonio Choral Society and Mid-Texas Symphony, and was the recipient of the George Cortez Award in Classical Singing from the San Antonio Artist Foundation in 2010. Currently, she is a member of the vocal ensemble Deux, and also serves on the voice faculty at The University of Texas at San Antonio.
Ms. Jarrell Johnson has been teaching voice students in North San Antonio for over ten years, and welcomes both adult and adolescent students (ages 14+) at all levels of experience and ability. She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the Texas Music Educators Association. She specializes in classical vocal technique to promote vocal health and longevity, and enjoys working in a variety of musical styles. She has given masterclasses and clinics at the high school and collegiate levels, and is experienced in audition preparation. She also provides fundamental instruction in music literacy and ear training, as well as vocal rehabilitation for the professional voice user through behavior modification and vocal health education.
